Japan PE: A surge of medium-sized world-class, alpha-driven opportunities
Thank you for attending our recently concluded AVCJ Private Equity & Venture Forum/ Japan 2011. The twelfth anniversary conference was attended by over 270 industry professionals from Japan and around the world, including more than 100 leading LPs.
Some highlights on the event include: Jun Tsusaka, Partner and Managing Director of TPG Capital – Japan delivered the opeing keynote address at the forum with an overview of the industry in Japan and beyond, outlining predictions for 2012. Later in the morning Yoshito Hori, Managing Partner of Globis Capital Partners spoke to the attendees about the impact of the earthquake and tsunami on Japan and the sectors where PE/VC can seek to make investments to speed up the recovery.
This was followed by a panel discussion featuring the leading investors on how the middle market offers more fertile ground for the PE industry, and how fund managers in this space are the most active in terms of both investment and exit. Day one closed with Jesper Koll, Managing Director and Head of Research, JP Morgan Securities Japan presenting a thought provoking talk on the Japanese economic outlook and the steps industry leaders must take to ensure growth.
Day two opened with panel discussions examining the strategies Japanese PE should adopt to roll out businesses in China with minimum challenges and maximum return, and the opportunities for PE investment in India. The leading Japanese Venture Capital players then formed a panel to discuss the VC opportunities in Japan and beyond and how VC can reinvigorate the economy with new ideas and new companies. The conference closed with a group of LPs debating the benefits of investing in Japan and the industries which provide the safest investment avenue with the best potential return.
